Triathlon nutrition: 9 Bar energy snacks (product review)

9Bar small logo_1You’ll probably either love or hate 9 Bar energy snacks. We consumed our entire supply of samples before we actually took them out of the office for road testing and had to buy more, so you can guess into which camp we fall. Some people, however, might think making a snack bar out of seeds is a very strange idea.

We think it works surprisingly well.

9 Bar original combines sunflower, pumpkin, sesame, poppy and hemp seeds stuck together with honey and vegetable oil and topped with carob. Other varieties add nuts, flax seeds or a mega dose of pumpkin seeds.

A quick scan of the nutrition data shows the bars pack a good dose of protein as well as carbohydrate and omega 3 and omega 6 oils. Seeds also provide minerals including iron, zinc and selenium.

Out on the road, the bars are comfortably satisfying. We found them best for long bike rides on cold days, and good for post-exercise or between meal snacks. They’re possibly too crumbly to eat during high intensity workouts, such as a sprint or standard distance triathlon, and they don’t pack the same instant energy boost of concentrated carbohydrate gels. On the other hand, you eat real nutritious food that will keep you going for the long haul.

If you incorporate your triathlon training into your daily commute, we’d recommend munching a bar an hour or so before leaving the office to cycle or run home.
