A relay team comprised Helen Gorman, Lucy Gossage and Louise Collins won the Nottingham-based Irondistance race overall in 8:52:15. Two of the three TFN team members are currently preparing for Ironman Hawaii later in the year and were invited by sponsors to participate in the race in a relay format. Paul Hawkins from Manchester was the first individual to finish the race, his first ever win at Irondistance, coming in 9:11:44. James Doust, hailing from New Zealand, completed the course in 9:21:19 to come second whilst third place came from Yorkshireman Tom Williams in 9:24:28. First individual female across the finish line was Joanna Swallow, sister of team GBR’s Jodie Swallow. She led the women out of the swim and maintained this lead to win the women’s race in 10:45.50. Viv Clement from Cardiff was the second individual woman across the line in 11:03.24 and third was York’s Emma Rand in 11:06.03.

Sapunova Takes First World Cup Win In Tiszaujvaros

Ukraine’s Yuliya Sapunova was first to break the tape in the women’s race at the Hungarian stage of the ITU World Cup. America’s Sara McLarty led much of the race due to a rapid opening swim. The chasing pack overtook early in the run, leaving Sapunova and Brit Jodie Swallow racing for the line. Swallow, who in fact ran the fastest 10km of the day, followed Sapunova in, just one second behind in an exciting sprint finish. It was the Ukrainian woman’s first World Cup win, finishing in 2:01:01. Carla Morena of Brazil took the third podium place. The men’s race was won by Reinaldo Colucci (BRA)  in 01:49:07. Crisanto Grajales (MEX) was only two seconds behind and Martin Krnavek (CZE) took the third podium place in the men’s race. Britain’s Adam Bowden finished in a respectable tenth place, 31 seconds behind the leader Colucci.

Youths Break The Mould In Hungary

The ETU Junior European Cup took place the day before the World Cup race featured above. The race comprised two run legs and two cycle legs arranged around the swim so that the overall order of the race was: 2.5 km run, 10km cycle, 750m swim, 10km cycle, 2.5km run. Despite having four transitions to contend with, the race’s winner, 18 year old Ron Darmon of Israel, finished up well under the hour in 53:33 . The non-standard race format was apparently to allow the athletes to spread out prior to the swim, as the city centre swim venue was very narrow.

Wellington Wows Roth With World Record

Chrissie Wellington made yet another entry in the Ironman history books on the 18th of July. If it wasn’t enough to put over 30 minutes between herself and the second place female finisher, she also smashed her own personal best by 12 minutes and 46 seconds. The 33 year old from Norfolk, UK, now holds not only the record fastest time for a female athlete to finish an Ironman Triathlon (8:19:13), she is also the first ever woman to complete five sub 9 hour Irondistance events. Wellington achieved these feats when she placed 7th overall in Challenge Roth, an Irondistance event held each July in Germany.

Jenkins Takes A Brace, Don Settles For Second Place

Helen Jenkins made it two wins on the trot, winning the London Triathlon for the second year running on the 8th of August. Organised by Challenger World, the triathlon is the biggest of its kind in the world. In fact, 13,000 participants took to the Docklands over the weekend of racing on the 7th and 8th of August. The race takes in sights such as the O2 Arena, the Houses of Parliament and the London Eye and offers the competitors the safety of fully closed roads. Jenkins placed first in the women’s category in 2:01:01 whilst Jodie Stimpson took second and Liz Blatchford third.  Courteney Atkinson took first place in the men’s race, finishing in 1:49:03, climbing the podium from his second place finish last year. Tim Don claimed the silver medal and Jarrod Shoemaker the Bronze. Aside from the Elite athletes, the scenic race attracted celebrities ranging from Vernon Kay to Jenson Button, who both raised money for charity as part of their preparation for the race.
