Docklands Light Railway (DLR) is on the hunt for an aspiring triathlete from East London that it can support to take part in the 2011 London Triathlon in July. The winning local athlete will receive a package that includes entry to the 2011 London Triathlon and a triathlon wetsuit and running shoes courtesy of Asics, together with £500 towards the purchase or hire of a triathlon bike for the race. Aspiring tri-athletes can visit www.dlr.co.uk/promotions for more information on how to enter.

Entrants must be from one of the London Boroughs that the DLR serves: Newham, Tower Hamlets, Greenwich, Lewisham and The City of London. Half Man, Half Machine: You And Your Bike

August 7, 2010

An Ironman Machine.

An Ironman Machine.

The cogs and wheels of a bike are plain to see, but the components of human muscle are much less clear. A little background biology and some time invested in bike set up can help you towards faster, more comfortable cycling. There are consequences of the speed at which you pedal and the gears you use that can affect your race day performance. Your position on the bike can also improve your training and racing, whilst gadgets like tri-bars can see your splits shrink.

How Do Muscles Work And Why Does It Matter To A Triathlete?

A detailed knowledge of sports physiology may not seem like the fastest way to a new PB, but if you understand how your body works, you are in a better position to fine-tune it through training effectively than someone who is blindly powering through junk miles. We’ll start with the body tissues that get you up in the morning; muscles.

Interview: John Brame, RG Active – Triathlete and Coach

June 11, 2010

RGActiveRG Active (www.rgactive.com) started life as a part time activity for John Brame but has since grown to become a vibrant coaching and triathlon business. John took some time out to talk to T-Zero about RG Active and to share some top tips for beginner triathletes.

What inspired you to set up RG Active?

I started RG Active with another triathlete, Dermott Hayes, over 5 years ago. It was originally something both Dermott and myself did alongside other jobs after seeing an opportunity in the growing triathlon market. I was seeing the sport grow at a rapid rate and all these people buying wetsuits and not being able to experience swimming outdoors until the day of their chosen event. We started offering group swim sessions to these people, a place where they could come and experience outdoor swimming in their wetsuit with experienced coaches who could offer advice and guidance before the ‘big day’.

I was also doing some cycle coaching and from there it started to evolve and I took RG Active on ‘full time’ in 2009.

Triathlon beginners: Charlotte Roach’s first race

May 6, 2010

IMGP2460 - CopyCharlotte Roach recently completed the Duston Triathlon, a pool-based sprint distance event. It was her first ever triathlon. She kindly agreed to share her experience, and her mistakes, with Tzero. Charlotte was a member of the TriGold triathlon programme until a collision with a car while on a training ride took her out of training for several months (see her story here). Despite loosing her place on the programme, Charlotte hopes to race elite triathlon someday soon and decided to carry on training and racing alone.

Overall, I’d say my first experience of triathlon was positive, but at times during the race it felt like a nightmare. To start with, I was overwhelmed by how technical triathlon is compared to running, where I’ve often raced before. Secondly, it’s incredible how much preparation and organisation has to go into each event, and I used to think that getting ready for a marathon was a logistical challenge. On the other hand, everyone was super helpful and supportive.
