Triathlon News From Around The Web, July 2010

Russians sprint to victory on a hot day in Holten.

The fifth round of the ITU World Cup took place in the Netherlands on Saturday. With water temperature at a balmy 22 degrees the athletes faced uncomfortable heat for all three disciplines. The men’s race saw Russian Ivan Tutukin win the race with an explosive sprint in the dying moments, beating fellow countryman Yulian Malyshev and Joao Pereira of Portugal. Just three seconds separated the podium-winning competitors.

Puncture takes the wind of out Peirsol’s sails.

In the women’s world cup race Hayley Peirsol had a commanding 45 second lead as she left T1 thanks to a powerful swim but a flat tyre laid waste to her surge. The Australian Erin Densham took the lead early in the 10km run, holding on for first place, followed by Annamaria Mazzetti  of Italy in second and Radka Vodickova of the Czech Republic in third.

Triathlon news from around the web (June 2010)

June 22, 2010

The last couple of weeks have shown (1) that top triathletes can earn serious money and (2) triathlon excellence can receive royal recognition. In our semi-regular round up of triathlon news from around the web we take a look at these two stories as well as the ETU cross triathlon championships and the outcome of Tri Grand Prix -  Zarautz, Spain.

Tim Don and Emma Snowsill win Hy-vee Elite Cup – Des Moines, Iowa, USA

Tim Don of Great Britain and Australian Emma Snowsill earned more than just the title of Hy-vee Elite Cup Champions on the 13th June. The prize money for the race totaled one million dollars.

Just four seconds separated Don, who finished first in 1:50:20, from New Zealander Gemmell who came in second. This slim margin was enough to secure Don the $200k top prize. Emma Snowsill also took home a $200k prize, finishing in 01:59:35, 16 seconds ahead of fellow Australian Emma Moffatt.

Triathlon news from around the web

May 19, 2010

We were saddened last week to read of the deaths of three triathletes killed while on a training ride Canada. It seems as if the three were part of a larger group struck by a pick up truck while riding along a high-speed road. The tragedy highlights one of the biggest dangers in triathlon. Most people who have been on the roads will know that however cautious you are, whether you ride quiet country lanes or main roads, incidents and near misses with motor traffic are only too common. Drivers, please look out for us. Cyclists, please do everything you can to protect yourselves. Our thoughts are with the victims friends and families.

Other triathlon related stories that caught our eye include the non-athletic women who joined the Running Sisters, ended up completing an aquathlon and are now contemplating triathlon. Tour de France winner Alberto Contador has signed up with SIS, a group calling itself the Global Sports Alliance has launched a flag flying scheme to encourage us all to be more environmentally conscious, and the Youth Olympic Games are fast approaching.
